Thirteen years ago, Donald Harvie retired from the business world in his 60s and picked up a paintbrush when he enrolled in a watercolor class for seniors. Since then, you might say he’s developed a healthy addiction to art. He’s given up his golf membership, is the owner of over 350 books on watercolor and has his work featured in nine national shows across the United States. Most recently, he is Cascade Arts & Entertainment’s October cover artist, showcasing his transparent watercolor piece called Make-Up Artist that won an award at a Mirror Pond Gallery exhibit.

Like all his paintings, Make-Up Artist was first an exciting experience, then a photograph and finally a finished piece. “I was attending a picnic with kids all over the place (my favorite subjects) and spotted this girl in her beautiful clown outfit putting colors on the children’s faces,” he said. “I took notes and photos back to my studio and started rough sketches of different positions, where the light would be most effective.”
